Ayurveda

Ayurveda in Sanskrit means "knowledge of life". It is the art of holistic living and the oldest (5000 years old) medicine system in practice today. Ayurvedic philosophy also indicates that everything in the universe is made up of 5 elements; fire, air, water, earth and space. These elements are combined under 3 "energies", known as 'Doshas' (body constitutions). The three doshas are Vata, Pitta and Kapha and represent the "subtle energy" that combines and balances the characteristics of the elements it influences.

Tulsi in Ayurveda

Tulsi’s main Ayurvedic guna (quality) as a healing herb is its ability to enhance the energetic resonance between the body and the environment. When Kapha, that governs mucus balance in the physiology, increases or becomes aggravated, the Pitta (fire) element and the circulation element (vata) in the physiology are doused, and this tends to increase the level of ama (toxins) in the body. This, in turn, leads to the immune system getting depressed.

Tulsi acts to pacify or decrease Kapha. The channels open, ama is cleared out of the body and the body's agni--the fire element in the physiology--becomes strong again. Balance is restored among the three doshas, and the immune system is restored to a healthy state.

Tulsi Aromatherapy

While Tulsi works at a physical level when it is absorbed through the skin into the blood tissue, what makes its action divine is its ability to go beyond the purely physical to unify the self-healing mechanism of the human physiology with the macro-level healing ability of Nature herself. To apply Tulsi transdermally, add three drops of Tulsi essential oil to an ounce of base oil such as sesame or jojoba. Apply a small amount to center of palms and soles twice a day. Essential oil of Tulsi can also be diffused through an aroma diffuser or added to hot water for steam therapy. Tulsi is a stimulant that opens the micro-channels of the body and thereby improves intra-dermal circulation.

Note: Essential oils are potent and best used under the guidance of an aromatherapist. Exercise care during blending and use. Never apply essential oils straight to the skin and always test for sensitivity before use. Do not use if you are pregnant or nursing.
